warnings: fix "variable ‘..’ set but not used" warnings

Fixed by commenting out the reported variables and their settings
instead of removing them. Since I am not sure if they were added by
mistake or by purpose and then overseen, I think it's better to keep
them in the code but not compile them in for now.
